Care Netram is a social enterprise that is working to provide vision care at the doorstep of the rural poor.

Lack of Awareness and Shortage of Optometrist is resulting in high cost and poor access to availing the eye care services especially in rural India and they are considered the main causes of India known as the blind capital of the world.

Care Netram strives to contribute to solving the above-mentioned problem by skill development intervention training for rural people to become Rural Opticians and have Good Vision Technicians (GVTs) as we call them who work under the aegis of Optometrist.

Our GVTs are mostly women who work after training in a group within their community and spread awareness about vision care which was followed by eye camps. Care Netram has partnered with One Dollar Glasses, Germany to execute our mission for enabling Rural India with Better Vision. One dollar Glasses supports us with their patented technology to produce low-cost eyewear supports our learning curve in technology and enhancements with respect to vision.  

Our organization is involved in helping the tribal and rural people. Providing Vision care to needy and below poverty line populations in remote locations has also been a special arena of work. 

Care Netram began with the operation in Odisha for almost 3 years and since then it has conducted free eye tests to the tune of 60000+ villagers and has provided glasses to 20000+ people at a very low cost by conducting 1000+ outreaches with our trained rural vision technicians. 

Care Netram has also partnered and is working in collaboration with renowned hospitals like  Rotary Hospital, Trilochan Netralaya, Kar Hospitals to help them to take care of the vision till the end. 

Their experience and expertise help our ROs training better and also enables them to refer their patients for free cataract surgeries to them and also for other diseases that they come across while conducting eye tests for free.

 What differentiates Care Netram?

Glasses that are sold and distributed are also manufactured locally where people are skilled and are provided with raw material to continue manufacturing. The glasses manufactured are lightweight and lenses that are being used can be easily changed by the opticians on spot enabling them to carry the glasses along in a small kit which is thereby saving a lot of time for patients to purchase the same.

This leads to the creation of micro-entrepreneurship within the community. The glasses manufactured can be robust and hold German quality standards which can be given to any age group from  6 years and above.

Currently in India 48,921,926 (approx) people live under extreme poverty

It is estimated that at least 200,000 children in India have severe visual impairment or blindness and approximately 15,000 are in schools for the blind. 

Although this represents a small percentage of the estimated 5 million blind in India, it is significant in terms of ‘blind-years’.
