HOPE is a collective of passionate, crazy minds wanting to do small and big things to help anyone in any way possible. HOPE was founded by Chhitra Subramaniam and Surya Balakrishnan.
The most strategic relief challenge now in India is Hunger and the action is required NOW.. “Hunger” caused by a combination of no incomes and the increased medical costs as the disease has spread virulently in India. The poor have lost their jobs, their savings with no fall back .. no money to feed themselves .. facing stark hunger ..if not managed it’s a ticking time bomb.
The Kid’s Nutrition Program
Our Daily Nutrition program has been running for 6 months now.
We provide basic daily supplementary nutrition to children in fragile communities- Eggs, Milk & Bananas to 1500 children across 5 communities in Mumbai.
Our reason to do this program from 28th April 2021- during the start of the 2nd wave , was to provide nutrition to these children, as this strain of covid has affected children and nutrition is key to keep their immunity up. Now we realise that chronic hunger, leading to malnourishment and stunting is on-going and so we want to continue for as long as possible.
Over the weeks their weight and health has been monitored and there is a vast improvement in health, more energy, more positivity, more engagement and interest in their studies. And much Hope for their families
The Cost per child, per week is only Rs 105,
or less than 2 Dollars USD per week.
Currently, we are running this program for 1500 children everyday in 4 communities in Mumbai. The program also needs to run for at least another 6 months to ensure the children’s immunity is built in a sustained manner.
Grocery Supplies
We are distributing grocery kits to people in need all over Mumbai and a few other cities. Our grocery kits consists - 5kgs Rice, 5 kgs Wheat flour, 2 kg Dal, 1 kg Sugar, 1 kg Salt, Tea leaves Chilli powder, Haldi powder, Soaps & Sanitary pads. Each kit cost approximately Rs 900.
Below are our updates. A part of the work has been towards Covid relief & now we are focussed on long term interventions that provide long term impact.
