What’s the #OxygenForIndia initiative?
India is facing its toughest health and humanitarian crisis since independence.
Thousands are dying simply because they cannot breathe.
#OxygenForIndia is a volunteer-run initiative to deliver lifesaving medical oxygen to those who need it the most, and especially the poor who have little chance of being admitted to a hospital.
What’s the need of the hour?
With no hospital admissions available, the only hope for critical COVID-19 patients is to get medical oxygen supply at their homes (in the form of cylinders and oxygen concentrators). Also, small hospitals have no reliable source of medical oxygen.
There is no specific database or helpline number to call for supplies. This has led desperate family members to rely on social media, which often leads to unreliable or outdated sources.
What can be done?
Despite a capacity to produce at least 7,100 tonnes of oxygen every day, the country is struggling to provide it where it is needed the most due to a supply chain and distribution issue. The delay is a product of where production units are located and a stretched distribution network.
We are establishing OxygenforIndia desks at various hospitals to help people get oxygen cylinders and concentrators at zero cost.
How does this help?
This will be a one-stop reliable solution for those in need. Providing medical oxygen helps
Manage home care for patients without the need for hospital admission.
Help hospitals with a supply of oxygen cylinders that is currently unreliable
Enable turnover of beds to allow new patients to be admitted. One of the reasons hospitals are not able to discharge patients is because they have no oxygen support at home. This would allow many more patients to be served.

During these heartbreaking times, I have a heart warming story that I really want to share with you. On Sunday Ankit Durga and I were urgently looking for oxygen for his extended family. He spent the entire day looking, spoke to dozens of people - people tried to scam the family into sending huge amounts of money - others who asked for massive upfront payments without any information. At 6pm Arun Seth connected us with Ramanan Laxminarayan and OxygenForIndia. They told us they would try and arrange it. At 9pm we got a call from Sunil from their team (who is now saved as oxygen hero on my phone!) who said they have found cylinders and we don't need to worry- they will get them delivered! When we asked about the money, they said it was completely free of charge. When Ankit called to tell the family, they cried with relief and gratitude and disbelief! Sunil stayed awake with the family till 2am that night & as promised delivered 2 filled cylinders to their doorstep. They refused to take any money at all. This team went out of their way completely to save a strangers life. In these horrible times OxygenForIndia represents the spirit of kindness and humanity. I would strongly urge you to support them in their mission.
