The endeavor of Akshar Trust is to enable children with hearing impairment have access to an academic environment which will prove to be their opportunity, perhaps their only opportunity, for a life of self-reliance and dignity. The vision of Akshar is to make an individual with deafness lead a useful, happy and fulfilling life.

Akshar Trust, Baroda, was established in 1988 to provide education and care to hearing impaired children and guidance to their families, conduct research, investigation and experiments in education of hearing impaired children and train teachers of the hearing impaired. The Centre is a non-profit, voluntary and secular organization. No hearing-impaired child is refused admission and children with problems in addition to deafness are also admitted.

Most of the children at Akshar, reside in the old part of city as they come from underprivileged backgrounds. Traditionally, Akshar was located at various locations in the old city area of Vadodara due to feasibility of acquiring inexpensive/free space to run the centre. Upon provision of land by Gujarat Government, Akshar built its own centre and relocated to Sherkhi, about 20 kms from the old city. Hence, providing them a mode of transport as they cannot afford on their own is imperative

We are falling short in few line items of which, running operations of bus facility is an area of concern. Not even one child in the past 30 years has paid what it costs to educate her/him. Akshar also faces challenges to pay competitively to staff vis-à-vis the market. Hence, this transport facility helps in mitigating the challenges. Akshar falls short of INR 13.30 Lakhs per annum in terms of meeting the running expenses of the bus facility. Hence, this Adoption drive to cater the expenses. It is cost effective and convenient than traditional fundraising, all the funds raised go towards the cause

Akshar has been a symbol of trust for over 30 years with numerous certifications and accreditations, especially by Rehabilitation Council of India and National Convention of Educators of the Deaf. Several Akshar alumni are successfully employed.

Our organization's journey so far

Akshar Trust, Vadodara, Gujarat, has been working as a charitable trust for hearing impaired children and completed 30 years in 2018. It was established in 1988 to provide education and care to hearing impaired children and guidance to their families, conduct research, investigation and experiments in education of hearing impaired children and train teachers of the hearing impaired. The Centre is a non-profit, voluntary and secular organization. No hearing-impaired child is refused admission.

How will we utilize the funds collected?

The funds collected will help us meet the running/operational expenses for the fleet of three buses. The operational expenses include the salaries of the drivers and conductors and other heads such as fuel, insurance etc. This will help us meet our deficit which we face due to inability on children's part to pay the bus fees

Who are the beneficiaries of these funds?

Children at Akshar, because they will receive bus facility for free. Also, the staff at Akshar are provided the bus facility as a benefit owing to the lower salaries they receive, vis-a-vis the market, as Akshar is a non-profit organization.

How will the beneficiaries lives change with these funds?

Most of the children at Akshar, reside in the old part of city as they come from underprivileged backgrounds. The new centre is about 20 kms from the city, hence, providing them a mode of transport as they cannot afford on their own is one of Akshar’s key responsibilities. This will help the children with certain degree of comfort while they acquire education.

Some of our success projects are

Akshar has started a ‘Capacity Building Program’ for other Special Schools for the Deaf in Gujarat. The first such program has been initiated with Dhwani Special School for the Deaf in Bharuch. Akshar has conducted 18 Continuing Rehabilitation Education (CRE) programs under the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) till date. Akshar is also the head office of National Convention of Educators of the Deaf (NCED) India - Gujarat Chapter.
